In a recent New Yorker article, "Where's Better Birth Control?," author Madeleine Schwartz describes the disappointing current state of birth control, the need for better options, and the promise of emerging technologies. Much of Schwartz' findings resonate with the type of birth control that Empreva aims to provide to women. Some of these findings include:
Women are largely dissatisifed with their birth control options, and a third of women have tried five or more types of birth control
Women want birth control methods that can be used before or after sex, rather than on a routine basis
Multipurpose prevention technologies (MPTs) that protect against both unintended pregnancy and STDs/STIs represent the "most promising" emerging technology
Schwartz also highlights the important connection between birth control and the empowerment of women, concluding with the following statement:
"The birth of the pill is one of the great milestones in the history of medicine, but there is still a real need for more affordable contraception, and contraception with fewer side effects. As for the dream that women might one day be free from the constraints of gender, it’s as worth taking seriously now as it was fifty years ago."
